‘Sultan’ creates havoc at the Indian box-office, shatters all records

Sultan continues with its blitzkrieg run at the box office, and the 1st-day worldwide collection grossed more than 70 crores. Many films have raked in 70 crores in their lifetime and were declared a moderate hit.

Sallu Bhai is rewriting the rules and the benchmark of hits. His previous release, Bajrangi Bhaijaan had set new records, and now it seems Sultan will soon be re-writing the definition of superhits.

It was not an unforeseen happening, and both Salman and Anushka had both done their homework well. The duo made it sure that a big buzz was created as a run-up to the release of the film.

The promotion was done in every medium. Newspapers were splashed with posters. The actors were seen on the idiot box in almost all reality shows. The move undoubtedly succeeded, and the flick managed to recover its costs in just two days.

The movie was made at a total cost of 90 crores out of which 70 crores was the actual production cost, and another 20 crores were spent on advertising and printing.

It remains one of the most expensive films ever made to date. The film is expected to rake in 150 crores in the first week which itself will be a record.  The flick is unstoppable and is setting new standards in Bollywood business.

Here is a breakup of the box office returns for the week-

  • Wednesday-36.54 cr
  • Thursday-37.32 cr
  • Friday-31.66 cr
  • Saturday-37.10 cr

Total: 142.62 cr

The film was released in 4352 screens in India and 1100 screens worldwide. 60% of the shows were houseful in most theaters. Occupancy continued to remain in the range of 90 to 100%.

The film was a crucial litmus test especially after the controversy of Salman’s ‘Feel like a Raped Woman’ statement which raised a massive outrage across the country and was construed as a  sexist remark.

However Salman’s fans have remained steadfast with the star, and if the movie crosses the Rs 200 crore mark, it will once again establish the star as the undisputed Numero Uno actor of Bollywood.
