Nuts can reduce risk of dying from multiple chronic diseases

According to a new study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, consuming modest quantity of nuts on a daily basis might considerably reduce our chances of dying from multiple chronic diseases.

The study points out that nuts are not only effective in reducing death risk from heat diseases, the most studied health benefit of nuts, but can also reduce risk of death from stroke, brain diseases, respiratory diseases and cancer.

The study surely brings some exciting news for nut lovers. However, researchers have said that the study had an upper limit, above which no additional benefit from consumption of nuts was observed.

The researchers also found that although peanut butter failed to showcase any benefit, peanuts did. This shows that peanuts, which are members of the legume family and are not nuts technically, possess the right of covering up as nuts.

During the study, the research team analyzed data collected from more than 120,000 Dutch people; these people have been participating in the NLCS (Netherlands Cohort Study) since almost three decades.

The researchers tracked health outcomes and dietary habits of the participants for ten years. The study involved analysis of tree nuts, peanut butter and peanuts. Peanuts, in spite of being legumes, possess a number of nutritional properties found in tree nuts; these include polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, etc.; this is the reason why peanuts are included in studies on health benefits of nuts so often.

It was found that individuals who consumed nuts regularly experienced a reduction in risk of dying from all the diseases analyzed during the study. The risk was around 23% less in the nut-consuming participants than individuals who didn’t have a habit of eating nuts.

To date, the majority of the studies conducted with the aim of establishing health benefits of nuts have concentrated primarily on nuts’ ability of controlling cardiovascular diseases.

This new study is different; it has found that nuts are also beneficial in reducing death risk from a host of other diseases, for instance, neurodegenerative and respiratory disorders, diabetes, stroke and cancer. The decrease in risk of suffering from neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s was found to be particularly robust. People who eat 10 grams or more nuts every day have 45% less chance of developing neurodegenerative conditions than those who eat none.
