The magic phone from Ringing Bells has arrived. Launched in New Delhi on Wednesday, the unique Rs 251 smartphone has already hogged the limelight with its rock bottom price.
BJP MP Dr Murli Manohar Joshi’s statement while delivering the presidential address at the launch event that technology if expensive can be useless, has been wholeheartedly adopted by Ringing Bells, and the phone seems to have followed this principle when pricing the device.
Except for bringing in the chipset from Taiwan, the Freedom 251 smartphone is made in India. The company has set an ambitious plan of making up to 75 percent of the hardware on Indian terrain by the year end. In due course of time, Freedom 251 will be totally made in India
In a bid to achieve this goal, the company might soon look at investing heavily in two manufacturing facilities in Noida and Uttaranchal. The investment could be to the tune of Rs 500 crore, and would eye 5 lakh units per month at each installation, a report said.
The bookings can be done online at the official website http://www.freedom251.com/.
Travelling alongside the government’s thoughts, the Freedom 251 incorporates Digital India, Skill India, and Make in India themes with much significance. The aim is to empower people in urban and semi-urban India.
That brings us to the question whether the Freedom 251 has the hand of the government supporting the venture. No, says the company brass, adding that Dr Joshi’s presence is due to the longtime friendship the company has with him. It has been reported that the BJP veteran provided “vision and guidance” for the Freedom 251 project.
With Freedom 251 launched, the goal of the company sells over one crore units per month. The orders are now being accepted, and if the number shoots up beyond 2.5 lakh, Ringing Bells might stop taking further orders.
In case you haven’t come across the specs as yet, Freedom 251 runs Android 5.1 OS. Sporting a 4-inch display, quad-core 1.3GHz processor, 1GB RAM, and 8GB storage (expandable to 32GB), Freedom 251 bookings will be on till Saturday, for Rs. 251. Shipping might get initiated by the end of June 30.
So, are you among those who have placed orders?
