Why Did Nintendo Spend 8 Years on Mario Kart World? The Struggle to Evolve a Perfect Game

The Struggle to Evolve a 'Perfect' Game
Nintendo's Mario Kart World took 8 years to develop, aiming to innovate its classic racing formula with open-world features and expanded multiplayer.

Nintendo is set to release Mario Kart World on June 5, 2025, alongside the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. This marks the first major installment in the Mario Kart series since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in 2017. The development journey of Mario Kart World spanned eight years, beginning in March 2017, as the team sought to innovate upon a formula many already considered flawless.

The Challenge of Innovating a Classic

Producer Kosuke Yabuki noted that after the success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the team felt they had perfected the traditional course-based racing format. This realization prompted a reevaluation of the game’s structure, leading to the ambitious goal of creating an open-world racing experience.

The envisioned open-world design presented significant challenges, especially given the hardware limitations of the original Nintendo Switch. The team aimed for seamless transitions between diverse environments, dynamic weather systems, and support for up to 24 players in a single race—all of which were taxing on the existing hardware.

Transitioning to Switch 2

Recognizing the constraints of the original Switch, development shifted focus to the more powerful Nintendo Switch 2. This transition allowed the team to realize their vision without compromising on performance or visual fidelity. The enhanced capabilities of the Switch 2 facilitated the integration of expansive environments and complex gameplay mechanics.

New Features and Gameplay Modes

Mario Kart World introduces several new features:

  • Open-World Exploration: Players can freely navigate interconnected environments, including cities, forests, and oceans.
  • Knockout Tour Mode: A competitive mode where 24 racers compete, with the bottom four eliminated at each checkpoint.
  • Free Roam Mode: Allows players to explore the world at their own pace, undertake missions, and discover collectibles.
  • Expanded Multiplayer: Supports up to 24 players online, enhancing the competitive experience.

Pricing and Availability

Mario Kart World is priced at $79.99 in the U.S., reflecting the expanded content and features. A bundle including the Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart World is available for $499.99.

Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 have seen high demand, with initial stocks selling out quickly. Retailers like GameStop, Best Buy, and Target have confirmed additional stock will be available on launch day.

The development of Mario Kart World underscores Nintendo’s commitment to innovation while respecting the core elements that have made the series a staple in gaming. By embracing new technologies and gameplay experiences, Nintendo aims to deliver a fresh yet familiar racing adventure for both longtime fans and newcomers.
