Rewinding Alabama’s season-opening basketball win – AL.com

It’s finally time for the No. 21 Alabama men’s basketball team to open the 2022-23 season. A visit from Longwood, who played in last’s NCAA tournament, is up first for Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide.

SECOND HALF
Alabama 75, Longwood 54 (final): Alabama moves to 1-0.
Alabama 64, Longwood 46 (3:58): How’s this for a stat? Alabama has 58 rebounds with 4 minutes still to play. Its season high as a team last year was 48. All three double-figure scorers are freshman as Alabama’s still struggling from the perimeter. Its now 2-for-25 from deep.
Alabama 55, Longwood 38 (7:56): The pace is slowing as Longwood is making 14.3% of its second-half shots (3-for-21). Rylan Griffen’s 12 points lead Alabama at this point with fellow freshman Brandon Miller the only other double-figure scorer with 10.
Alabama 48, Longwood 31 (11:55): Longwood is cold from the field again, opening 1-for-13 from the field for the second straight half. The Tide holds a 44-26 rebounding edge but has 14 turnovers and is 2-for-19 from the perimeter.
Alabama 42. Longwood 27 (16:31): The Tide opens the half on an 8-1 run with Noah Clowney scoring the last five of those points. His 3-pointer forced a timeout from Longwood as the Tide nears its biggest lead of the game. Rylan Griffen leads the Tide with 10 points.
FIRST HALF
Alabama 34, Longwood 26 (halftime): Brandon Miller’s 8 points lead Alabama who led by as many as 16 in the first half. The Tide is outrebounding Longwood 32-15 and has 7 blocks to the Lancers’ 2. The 26-8 points-in-the-paint edge also speaks to the length advantage Alabama holds. Perimeter shooting isn’t there so far as the Tide is shooting 1-for-13 from behind the arc.
Alabama 30, Longwood 17 (3:43): Alabama scored 7 straight in the last 1:03 to take a 26-12 lead over Longwood. It stretched to an 11-2 run as Alabam’s length became an issue on the defensive end. It blocked 6 shots in the first 17 minutes.
Alabama 19, Longwood 12 (7:53): The Tide had 6 turnovers in the first 11 minutes but killed the Lancers on the boards. It had a 17-7 rebounding edge as Alabama’s length became an issue. Brandon Miller showed off his midrange jumper with his sixth point of the night. He leads all scorers at this point. Alabama is 0-for-8 from the perimeter.
Alabama 13, Longwood 5 (11:48): The visitors are 1-for-13 from the field (8%). Rough. Brandon Miller has 4 early points in his debut for the Tide. Alabama is on a 9-0 run to jump ahead 11-3 with Longwood missing 8 straight shots. The Tide is cranking up the defensive pressure to force some bad shots.
Alabama 8, Longwood 3 (15:38): Alabama opened the game 0-for-5 from the 3-point line but scored on dunks from Bediako and Noah Clowney to take a 8-3 lead. Longwood missed its last seven shots entering the TV timeout.
