WASHINGTON, D. C. – President Joe Biden on Tuesday picked a career diplomat who hails from Barberton to be the next U.S. ambassador to the Russian Federation.
Lynne M. Tracy currently serves as U.S. ambassador to Armenia. Before that, she was a senior advisor on Russian issues in the State Department’s bureau of European and Eurasian affairs. She previously was the deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in Moscow, and has held diplomatic posts in Turkmenistan, Pakistan and Kazakhstan.
Her nomination, which comes at a tense moment in U.S. relations with Russia because of the Ukraine war, will be sent to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for consideration.
While serving in Pakistan, gunmen sprayed her car with bullets as she was being driven to work, although nobody was injured. After that incident, she received a State Department award from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
“Despite a violent kidnapping attempt and threats against your life, you remained at this critical post to complete your mission with steadfast courage and gallant leadership,” her award for heroism said.
Tracy has a bachelor’s degree in Soviet studies from the University of Georgia and a law degree from the University of Akron. She speaks Russian.
During Tracy’s 2018 Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing to secure the ambassadorship to Armenia, she pledged to support the “democratic aspirations” of the Armenian people.
“If confirmed, I will do everything in my power to strengthen and deepen the U.S.-Armenian partnership,” she told the committee. “Finally, as a veteran of multiple high-danger postings, questions of safety and security for American citizens and embassy personnel will have my complete attention and will be my highest priority if confirmed.”
