Pebble is a name that has been around now for a few years. Originally coming to the public eye on Kickstarter where it saw an incredibly successful launch and campaign. The company then successfully launched the original Pebble and the Pebble Steel, which retailed for $99 and $199 respectively – which was seen as a success by virtually everyone who had eyes, and watched the smartwatch segment of the tech space. The brand new Pebble Time was revealed today, and was launched on Kickstarter. In many ways, Pebble made Kickstarter what it is today from the amount of success that the original Pebble had, but this time, there is no doubt about how well the latest Pebble smartwatch will do.
Pebble doesn’t have to worry about the likes of Samsung or Apple, and their smartwatches because they’re doing one thing very well. They understand who they are, and they understand what their customers want exceptionally well. The most-important features of the Pebble Time, are things that ultimately made the original Pebble so successful. It keeps battery life at the same level it had previously achieved by utilizing an e-paper face which allows for 64 different colors. E-paper has been getting a lot of attention lately for the small amount of energy and battery power required to actually make it work. The Pebble Time though doesn’t just feature an inexpensive display, since that e-paper display is actually covered by a Gorilla Glass watch face.
That being said though, the Pebble Time delivers a user interface that is definitely impressive for the slight amount of battery that the device uses. Pebble says that the Pebble Time will still get as much as 5 days on one charge, which is impressive for any electronic device in 2015. As far as the interface goes though, the creators pointed out that they wanted to return to simplicity for the Pebble Time. Pebble noted that watches were never something that were complicated, until tech companies began complicating them. That’s why Pebble has stayed away from touchscreen and elected to have an interface that would primarily function off of two actions – moving backward and moving forward.
Moving forward will show the user what they have going on the rest of the day, like appointments and meetings, while moving backward will show you notifications in the order in which they were received. Everything is geared on a timeline, and that’s how Pebble believes it should be. It will also feature a modified apps section, which will show users widgets instead of a simple list as far as third-party apps are concerned on the Pebble Time. In all, this looks like it will be the most-exciting Pebble smartwatch created to date.
