A new Netflix show from the creators behind Dark has been released and fans are comparing it to some all-time classics of cinema.
When a new series drops it’s always handy to know whether it’s worth your time as there are plenty of things to watch and not enough time to see them all.

When you press play on a new Netflix series you want to be sure it’s the sort of thing you’ll be glad you spent your time on, rather than something you struggled through for a few episodes before ditching.
Step forward 1899, the new series from the creators of the hugely popular thriller show Dark, which centres around a ship full of immigrants travelling from London to New York that discovers another vessel adrift on the ocean.
What happens after that is up to you to find out, at least if you reckon 1899 is worth your time after all.
Dark wrapped up a third and final season over two years ago, and if you loved that then you should probably give 1899 a go.
Both shows are made by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, so fans of Dark will already know what sort of experience is in store for this new series.
Starring Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard and Andreas Pietschmann among the cast, 1899‘s trailer teases us with an incredible discovery kicking off all of the chaos which is set to unfold over the rest of the show.
Fans of Dark and those who’ve already tuned in to watch 1899 are buzzing about it on social media, and they’ve spotted some pretty clear links to a few very recognisable films.
One person said 1899 was ‘yet another MASTERPIECE’ from the creators of Dark and said it even reminded them of the likes of mind-blowing movies such as The Matrix and Inception.
That’s got to be very high praise indeed, and plenty of others agreed with the comparison.
Someone else said the new series was a mixture of ‘Matrix + Predestination + Dark + Inception + Shutter Island‘ which all added up to make 1899.
A third continued the Matrix comparisons, suggesting the series was like a crossover between The Matrix and Passengers, while a fourth declared it was ‘like The Matrix but steampunk’.
Others said ‘wtf 1899 is like the Matrix omggg’ and that the show reaches ‘insane levels of sci-fi’.
However, not everybody was such a fan as someone else who made the same connection as many others admitted they saw the parallels with The Matrix but called the show ‘eight episodes of boredom’.
1899 is available to watch now on Netflix.
