Kuemper is a relative of Father Joseph Kuemper, namesake of the Catholic school in Carroll. Bishop Nickless is originally from Denver and is an avid sports fan.
Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse was the featured speaker at the 2022 Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Schools. He is a native of Carroll and graduate of Kuemper Catholic High School.

Kuemper is a relative of Father Joseph Kuemper, namesake of the Catholic school in Carroll. Bishop Nickless is originally from Denver and is an avid sports fan.
Carroll native and Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse traveled to northwest Iowa to serve as the featured speaker for the Sept. 17 Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Schools after two years of virtual events. The 26th annual event was at the Marriott South Sioux City Riverfront in South Sioux City, Neb.
The coach is also a graduate of Kuemper Catholic High School in Carroll. Nurse helped lead Kuemper Catholic to the 1985 state basketball championship. He later played for the University of Northern Iowa.
Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse was the featured speaker at the 2022 Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Schools. He is a native of Carroll and graduate of Kuemper Catholic High School.
After college, he then served at Grand View University as the youngest college basketball head coach in the country at that time. He coached in Europe for 11 years beginning in 1996, winning nine championships and two Coach of the Year awards while earning six All-Star head coach selections in the British Basketball League.
Nurse then coached the NBA G-League’s Iowa Energy where he led Iowa to a championship in 2011.
Nurse is currently in his fifth season as head coach of the Toronto Raptors after guiding the team to its first NBA Championship in 2019.
He also served as an assistant coach in the 2012 Olympics for the host British National Team. Nurse was named head coach of the Canadian Senior Men’s basketball team in June 2019.
Nurse is married to Roberta and has three sons – Noah, Leo and Rocky.
The speaker noted his upbringing in a large family as well as caring educators and coaches helped form him into a competitive and hard-working person. During his speech, he took time to present checks to the Diocese of
Sioux City for Catholic schools, to the Kuemper athletic boosters and the Kuemper fine arts program. He formed his own foundation to raise funds to help disadvantaged students in his area receive musical instruments and music lessons.

The Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Schools serves as the single largest fundraiser benefiting the 16 Catholic school systems throughout northwest Iowa. Over 5,800 students receive a faith-based education each year in the diocesan schools. Proceeds from the 2022 Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Schools are earmarked for the Parent Partner Fund for tuition assistance.
Six Catholic school faculty and staff received Excellence in Education and Good Shepherd awards at the event. The Excellence in Education Award winners are Laura Anderson of St. Mary School in Storm Lake, Melanie Dettmann of St. Mary School in Humboldt, Rhonda Leuer of Sacred Heart School in Sioux City and Becky Wolf of Mater Dei School in Sioux City.
The Good Shepherd Award winners are Bob Geary of Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City and Mark Schlesser of Gehlen Catholic School in Le Mars.
The 16 Catholic school systems located within the Diocese of Sioux City, are in Algona, Alton, Boone, Carroll, Danbury, Denison, Emmetsburg, Fort Dodge, Humboldt, Le Mars, Pocahontas, Remsen, Sheldon, Sioux City, Spencer and Storm Lake.
