Defending champions Perth Scorchers have suffered a double blow ahead of the upcoming season of the Big Bash League (BBL) as their star players Mitchell Marsh and Phil Salt have been ruled out of the entire BBL 12.
Cricket Australia (CA) has already announced the complete schedule for the Big Bash League (BBL) 2022-23, which will be the 12th edition of Australia’s T20 competition. The tournament is set to commence on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, with Sydney Thunder taking on the Melbourne Stars at the Manuka Oval, and the final of the T20 league will take place on February 4, 2022.

Mitchell Marsh is all set to undergo a keyhole surgery on his troubled left ankle to remove loose bone fragments and repair cartilage, which will damage his Test recall chances, and he will be out of action for three months.

Marsh, who last played Test cricket for Australia in 2019, was recently included in the Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour, but he didn’t get a chance to play. Also, he will most likely be unavailable for the Border–Gavaskar Trophy 2023 in India.
“I’m realistic in the fact that I know that whilst I’m in the squad and reasonably close, in the same sentence I’m probably not that close. The Test team is very settled,” Marsh told foxsports.com.au last month.
“I’m hopeful I’ll get one more opportunity, one more crack to play Test cricket but, for now, I’m enjoying being around the squad. I worked really hard to get myself in a position to be back in contention for Test cricket.”
Talking about Marsh, Australian chair of selectors George Bailey said that they are hopeful of the star all-rounder recovering in time for the next year’s ODI series against India in March, which will be a part of Australia tour of India 2023.
“Mitchell is an important member of our squads, and we will support him through his recovery period and we are hopeful he will be available for Australian selection for the ODI series against India in March.
“In undertaking the surgery now, it gives Mitchell the best chance to recover and resume his all-rounder skillset which is an important part of our plans for the upcoming year and beyond,” he said in an official statement.
England star Phil Salt will miss the upcoming season of BBL after sustaining a grade-two ligament injury on his left shoulder during the third ODI of the three-match series against the Australia National Cricket Team at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last week. Notably, Salt suffered the injury while diving to save a boundary during the match and he was subbed out.
While talking about Marsh and Salt being ruled out of the BBL 12, Perth Scorchers general manager Kade Harvey said it’s a “very disappointing” development.
“Losing Mitch and Phil so close to the start of the season is very disappointing,” Perth Scorchers General Manager of High Performance Kade Harvey said in a statement.
“Mitch is one of the best ball-strikers in global cricket with an incredible MBBL record, and his leadership and presence around the group is enormous. Phil has proven his class for England and in T20 tournaments around the world, so it’s unfortunate he won’t pull on the orange this summer,” he further said.
“We’re under no illusions about how difficult it will be to cover the absence of Mitch and Phil, but we take pride in the depth of our squad and have a lot of players capable of stepping up. The whole organisation remains as motivated as ever to win a fifth MBBL championship,” he added.
Meanwhile, Faf du Plessis will be representing Perth Scorchers for the first seven games of the BBL 2022-23 before travelling back to South Africa to participate for Johannesburg Super Kings in SA20. Du Plessis has been included in the team as a replacement for Laurie Evans, whose contract was terminated following his positive dope test.
