High Stress In Father Can Cause Diabetes to Children

As per a new study, it has been found that fathers who are stressed can put their kids at a high risk of diabetes. Experts stated that owing to stress hormones, a change can be caused diabetes. Experts stated that owing to stress hormones, a change can be caused in sperm which induces high blood sugar in children.

This research highlights the fact that the life experience of a male can be passed down to the generation, more than only his genetic code.

However, the stress hormones of the father can be blocked for preventing cha anges and impending damage.  Male mice were involved in this study but scientists suggested that these findings are more applicable to the humans.

For inducing stress, male mice were confined in plastic tubes for 2 hours for 2 weeks. After that, there was a rise in the glucose levels and mice gained more weight gradually. Later, an increase in the stress hormone, named glucocorticoids was seen in case of affected mice.

Then these mice were mated with females that weren’t affected and the offspring had high level of blood glucose as compared to normal.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Xiaoying Li stated that they had more interest in how glucose homeostasis is affected by behavioral change.

Mouse dads who were under stress produced children having high blood sugar in comparison with unstressed counterparts. Li further stated that owing to paternal psychological stress, hyperglycemia can be caused in the mice’s offspring.

A gene named Sfmbt2 was the root cause of increase in blood sugar. When immobilization of male mouse was done in a plastic tube, extra methyl groups were added to the sfmbt2 owing to spike of glucocorticoids.

Once the researchers understood the mechanism, the effects of glucocorticoids could be blocked in the sperm of the mouse father.

When male mice was injected with a molecule that dampened the effect of glucocorticoids, the Sfmbt2 gene was stopped from being overly methylated.
