Grand jury indicts Texas governor for abuse of power

A grand jury has indicted the Texas governor, Gov. Rick Perry, on a two count charge that borders on mismanagement of public funds and abuse of powers. This came on the heels of his standoff Rosemary Lehmberg, the Travis County District Attorney, who was arrested last year for drunken-driving.

Gov. Rick Perry appears to have started when he vetoed $7.5 million funding that could have otherwise been released for public corruption unit in Lehmberg’s bureau, even after the latter had been convicted and served a three-week jail term and wouldn’t quit office.

This led an anti-Perry agency to file a charge that eventually led to the grand jury sitting and condemning Perry’s policies. It had come to the fore during investigations that Gov. Perry had cut funding to Lehmberg’s public corruption office because it was investigating the source of funding for the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, owned by the governor.

This indictment is obviously not coming at a good time for Texas governor in the light of his ambitions to contest for the presidency come 2016. Perry had made a play for presidential nominations and failed in 2012, and this current indictment is seen to batter his attempt at repairing his image for a comeback at 2016 GOP presidential nominations.

Gov. Perry is the longest serving governor for Texas, a state that happens to be the second most populous state in the United States. He is also the second governor to be indicted since 1917 when James Ferguson was convicted for a finance scandal.
