A Thursday night report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention distinguished Allegheny County among those across the country with a high COVID-19 community level.
However, doctors in the region say there is no reason for alarm because vaccines are preventing the worst-case scenario; death and hospital care in the intensive care unit.

“The vaccines are there to help keep you from getting sick,” says Dr. Brian Lamb, with Allegheny Health Network Internal Medicine. “They keep you from being hospitalized and thank God, they keep you from dying.”
Medical professionals say it is still wise for the public to continue to engage in safe practices, especially entering the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Advice from the Allegheny County Health Department is to continue to wear masks indoors in public.
“N95 respirator and KN94/95 are more protective than cloth or surgical masks,” says Dr. Debra Bogen, director of the county’s health department.
Dr. Graham Snyder, UPMC director of infection prevention, says there are several matters the public should consider during events this weekend and beyond.

“And that relates to the nature of the event, how many people are there, how good is the air circulation at the event, whether people are masking or not, and also, what are the consequences to you if you were to become infected,” Snyder said.
