Countdown to Microsoft Windows 10 begins as it arrives on July 29

The countdown to the most awaited update of the operating system begins today. Microsoft is all set to launch Windows 10 on July 29 this year with the statement “It’s the Windows you know, only better”.

It is said to be the last version of the operating system. This is because the company now wants to launch updates to the OS by means of ‘as a service’ model for Windows. This means there would no longer be distinct numbered generations of upgrades. Also with this model, the updates will be delivered automatically. The American multinational has even bypassed Windows 9 generation of the software after the unrewarding Windows 8 version. This evidences the fact that Microsoft wants to highlight the distance and difference between the new version and the previous generation software.

The Redmond headquartered company is launching its replacement of Internet Explorer with the debut browser ‘Microsoft Edge’. Before the release date, it is also emphasizing the return of the Start menu to Windows 10 which had disappeared in Windows 8 and disappointed everyone. In addition to this, there will also be an advanced integration of Microsoft’s voice controlled digital personal assistant- Cortana, a rival to Apple’s Siri and Google Now.

A touch-enabled environment has been equipped in this software as it provides a common user interface combining the best features of Windows 7 and Windows 8. The software periodically checks for system and app updates, downloads and installs them. Some of the other features include support for game streaming from Xbox One consoles, availability of cross device Windows store and optimized screen views for each device.

Developers can rejoice as application environments can be unified. Customer base across PCs, phones and tablets is being integrated, thus increasing client exposure and amassing new opportunities.

Microsoft has been working hard on testing and reviewing the software. It says that five million Windows Insiders have given their inputs on the new OS after tweaking and reviewing. They have been taking several builds for test drives ahead of its release. Windows 10 will have the same code across all Windows devices including phones, tablets and computers, thus making it the first universal version of the operating system.

There is a stark difference in the procedure to build and test the two versions (Windows 8 and Windows 10) of the software. While the previous one was built in secrecy with hardly any disclosures and public testing programs, the new OS has been subject to scrutiny by millions of insiders. The site invites the public to register and start using Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview with the Windows Insider Program a few days before its launch.

It has already published the end-user license agreement (EULA) required for anyone to download the new OS. According to the document, since the upgrades will be supplied automatically with the ‘as-a-service’ model, small-business users and customers will have to compulsorily accept them without any additional notice. The option to choose or avoid selected updates is going to be ruled out.

The software is said to be launched in phases beginning with the Windows insiders followed by users having made reservations online, and finally enterprise users who will gain access to the OS on August 1 this year. According to the company’s site, users can deploy Windows 10 with an uncomplicated In Place Upgrade process without having to wipe and reload the device to migrate directly to Windows 10. The site also states that large-scale deployments can be carried out by Dynamic Provisioning, providing IT the capability provision devices right out of the box thus reducing the cost and complexity.
