AT&T expects litigation after net neutrality decision by FCC

AT&T expects to go to court if the FCC reclassifies Internet service as a Title II service. Interestingly, AT&T chief Randall Stephenson pointed out that “there will be litigation,” if the FCC does not stray from the current path that it is on. Net neutrality is the decision that those within the tech space have been waiting for, for potentially years now – and it’s drawing close.

Specifically, the decision – which is expected later this month – could completely change – or as some have pointed out, change nothing at all, in an area where opinions remain polarizing. While some are for the decision to reclassify the Internet as a Title II service, others – like the tech companies themselves, are seriously against the move – citing that it would completely destroy the way things are currently set up.

At the end of the day, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler will have one of the most-complicated decisions that the FCC has ever had to make on his hands – but the decision he makes will be one that is incredibly prudent in determining what the next several years look like in the tech space. Stephenson even went as far as to say that “it’s quite clear” that a lawsuit would be on the way if the decision went through.

The biggest factor here is thinking about the companies that are in play, and looking at the names that would potentially be jumping into the race to take legal action. Not just service providers themselves but the companies who work with those service providers closely. It’s important to note that the tidal wave of litigation that could come from this decision – would be enough alone to completely stall technological advancement – should this move be made and the companies follow through. If they do not, then it sets the tone that they are willing to accept the consequences of this type of action.

The regulations that would undoubtedly be present would be more than what many tech companies want to see. AT&T already feels as though regulation stifles their growth, and this would only stifle that growth further. This is why the decision will be so important to see be made. Whether we’re talking about the decision to reclassify the Internet as a Title II service or not.
