Apple updates Boot Camp with 64-bit Windows 10 support

Mac models with OS X Yosemite installed will now support Windows 10 installation using Boot Camp. The support software drivers need to be present, which will be downloaded automatically using Boot Camp Assistant. Boot Camp is Apple’s tool to allow Intel Mac owners to dual boot OS X and Windows. The company’s latest version of the multi boot utility, Boot Camp 6, was rolled out on Thursday.

It updated the Boot Camp tool that supports 64-bit versions of Windows 10 on supported Mac models. The updates includes drivers for USB 3 on recent MacBooks, and the single USB Type-C port found on the new 12-inch MacBook along with Thunderbolt, SD and SDXC connections, built-in or external Apple SuperDrives, and the Apple keyboard, mouse and trackpad. Supported Macs include versions of iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, MacBook, 11 and 13 inches MacBook Air and 13 and 15 inch MacBook Pro. It is reported that the upgrade is still propagating and will be available on Intel Macs soon.

Users will also need to have an authentic copy of Windows 10 installed on a separate partition. This can be purchased from Microsoft as an ISO file, installation DVD, and a USB flash drive for $119. In case the ISO file is not available, one can use Disk Utility to make the file from installation DVD or USB drive.

Following are the steps to install new version of Windows 10 on Mac:

  1. Check the Mac models which support 64-bit versions of Windows 10, the list for which is available on the Apple website.
  2. Make sure to be updated by checking for software updates with respect to OS X, the Mac firmware, and Boot Camp Assistant.
  3. Open Boot Camp Assistant from the Utilities folder. It can be found using Spotlight.
  4. Install the new version of Windows using Boot Camp Assistant.

In case there is already an installed version of Windows on the Mac, following steps can be taken to upgrade from 64-bit versions:

  1. Check the Mac models which support 64-bit versions of Windows 10 and start Mac from OS X.
  2. Choose App Store from the Apple menu and check for software updates.
  3. Start Mac from the Windows version. Open Apple Software Update for Windows and install available updates. Use the Windows installer to upgrade Windows.

If Windows 8.0 exists on the Mac, users have to upgrade to Windows 8.1 first before upgrading to Windows 10. In case Mac users have a running version of Boot Camp 5, they would automatically get updates of the same.
