Google announced Android 5.0 Lollipop back in the Fall of 2014 (November) with the unveiling of its new HTC Nexus 9 as well as its latest-generation smartphone, the Motorola Nexus 6. Since that time, we’ve been anxiously awaiting announcements from Google’s Android manufacturers (Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG, etc.) regarding when their latest devices can expect the update.
Motorola was the first to strike, releasing Android 5.0.2 Lollipop for first-generation and second-generation Moto G models in India and the second-gen. Moto G in the US two weeks ago. Brazil, Europe, and other countries were also said to be receiving an OTA update at that time, despite Motorola’s early rollout of Android Lollipop (5.0.1) to some Moto G devices back in December. This was right on the heels of Google releasing Android 5.0.1 for its own Nexus devices around that same time. The Moto G Google Play Edition (GPE) has, of course, gotten its share of Lollipop love.
LG G3 Announcement
Motorola is usually the first Android OEM to release Google’s newest updates for its devices before practically any other manufacturer.
HTC promised via social media that it would release Android 5.0 Lollipop, LG started teasing G3 users with promises of that new sweet treat from Google, with the Android 5.0 Lollipop update announced for G3 users in the UK (specifically from Vodafone) in mid-December, along with Germany, South Korea, other European countries, India, and Poland. Poland was the first to be teased with the Lollipop update, but the US remained a question mark until LG’s Twitter tease on January 23rd with the words “Life with your LG G3 is about to get sweeter,” and a picture of lollipops in the background.
The first carrier to make something of an Android 5.0 Lollipop announcement for the G3 in the US is Sprint. A leaked photo shows Sprint releasing Google’s latest sweet treat for the HTC One M7, HTC One M8, the One M8 Harmon Kardon edition, and the LG G3. The leaked Sprint document points to February 16 as the magic date.
Samsung releases Lollipop for the Galaxy S5 via Verizon, two international carriers confirm coming update
Some internal documents from Samsung claimed that the company intended to release the Android Lollipop update early this year, and Samsung did not disappoint. Earlier this week, in an act considered to be nothing short of miraculous, Samsung finally released the Android Lollipop update for Galaxy S5 users in the US via American carrier giant Verizon Wireless. Other American carriers have not yet said anything about when their Galaxy S5 users can expect Lollipop. The Sprint documented mentioned earlier regarding the LG G3 is the closest we’ve come to for an announcement from Sprint.
French carrier SFR has announced that its Galaxy S5 users should receive the Lollipop update in late February, despite earlier internal evidence that SFR GS5 users would see the update in the December-January time frame, and Rogers says that its GS5 Lollipop update is “coming soon” – without any additional details. Rogers also confirms a Galaxy Note 4 updates that is “TBD,” acronymic for “to be determined.”

We also know that Poland, Australia, the UK, Spain, Malaysia, and South Korea have already seen their Galaxy S5 Lollipop releases, but we’ve heard no word on the Lollipop update for the Galaxy Note 4 – Although we’ve seen some instances of 5.0.1 Lollipop on some Samsung Note 4 devices in the wild. No word from American carriers or international carriers, outside of Rogers, about when we can expect to see Lollipop for the Galaxy Note 4.
Sprint did an OTA update on 2/5 that gave me Lollipop 5.0.2 for my HTC One (M7). I’m happy to see that HTC kept their word and even updated their M7 a day before their M8 got the update.
