5.5-inch iPhone 6 to be named “iPhone 6L”

If you pay attention to tech news on a regular basis, you are aware that Apple is going bigger with two new iPhone 6 models this year that will both be larger than the 4-inch iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 models released over the last two years. Prior to that, Apple released 3.5-inch displays for the iPhone 4S, so Apple’s been on the small side of smartphone displays.

And, with the company going larger, the iPhone 6 models will likely feature something to distinguish the two. Apple chose the name the plastic iPhone from last year the “iPhone 5C,” with the “C” standing for “color.” As you can see, Apple is not one to come up with fancy names for iPhones. After all, have you noticed that “iOS” was once “iPhone OS” (or still is, if you know that “iOS” is an abbreviation)? Of course, Apple is not alone – Windows has yet to rename its Windows Phone OS something other than Windows Phone. When it comes to nomenclature, Android takes the “cake,” as well as the “doughnut,” “éclair,” “gingerbread,” “honeycomb,” “ice cream sandwich,” “jelly bean,” and “KitKat” (to name just a few of Android’s updates).

What has Apple chosen for its 5.5-inch iPhone 6? An “L,” to be specific. The larger iPhone 6 will be labeled the iPhone 6L, with the “L” standing for “large” according to sources familiar with the matter. Tech site Apple Daily has discovered the name of the device through its own sources, providing iPhone 6 and iPhone 6L photos that confirm the 1,810mAh battery that has been seen before while giving new information about the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 battery. The iPhone 6L, however, will boast a 2,915mAh battery – a dramatic improvement over the 2,300mAh battery or so that many were expecting.

Apple has had trouble with manufacturing batteries for the iPhone 6, struggling to find a company that could keep the device thin and light to Apple’s specifications while still providing the kind of battery life many have desired. It looks, though, as if Apple is on its way to having both devices ready for the big announcement next month.

The iPhone 6 will come in two sizes, a 4.7-inch display and a 5.5-inch display. Higher-memory storage models will likely bear sapphire crystal displays, while the other lower-end memory storage models will still bear some form of Gorilla Glass (perhaps Gorilla Glass 4). The increase in display size will also lead to a screen resolution increase for both iPhone 6 models, and some say that Apple could increase the 4.7-inch display from the current 1136 x 640 to a 1700 x 900 (approximate) screen resolution. The iPhone 6 will feature a 13MP camera that utilizes Sony’s Exmor sensor, which increases the 8MP camera found in the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5C.

At last year’s iPhone 5s announcement, Apple unveiled a plastic iPhone 5C that was substituted for the iPhone 5 in the company’s lineup. There has been no word on whether or not Apple will provide an iPhone 5C refresh, although there seems to be some demand (however small) for it.
