The original flick which was released in 1996 starred Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman. The sequel was touted to hit screens on July 4, American Independence Day but later the producers adhered to their original schedule and released it on June 24.

Talks about making the sequel started in 2002, the year when the world saw terrorism in its worst form as the WTC bombing. However, Roland Emmerich, director of the first film did not relish the idea of cashing in the fear and paranoia generated by 9/11.

The sequel was almost shelved when it became evident that Will Smith will not do the sequel as Captain Steven Hiller. Smith, who had already done Men in Black 3, was still busy with the 2013 flop Sci-Fi movie “After Earth”, which also starred his son, Jaden Smith, did not want to do three sci- fi films in a row. It was only when scriptwriters Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods rewrote the story; work on the movie once again started in the right earnest.
