Go for low-fat diet not low-carb diet if you want to lose more fat

According to a new study published in the journal Cell Metabolism, a low-fat diet results in more fat loss a low-carb diet. During the said study, researchers analyzed participants on controlled diets intensely by inspecting every breath taken, piece of food consumed, and minute of exercise they performed.

Analysis carried out by the National Institutes of Health revealed that both low-carbohydrate diet and low-fat diet resulted in fat loss when calorie intake was reduced, but participants on low-fat diet experienced more fat loss than the ones on low-carb diet.

Experts often say that the most effective diet is the one that people can continue with.

Since a long time we have seen people arguing that reducing carb intake is the easiest way of getting rid of a stubborn fat; this is because such diets help in altering our body’s metabolism.

The theory goes like this: low carbohydrate intake results in reduction in insulin levels, which triggers release of fat stored in our body.

Low-Fat-Diet

Dr. Kevin Hall, the lead author of the study, said that it’s true that all those things will happen to you if you follow a low-carb diet, but definitely not as strongly as when you are on a low-fat diet. Dr. Hall is a representative of the National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

During the first stage of the study, 19 obese individuals were given a 2,700 calorie diet per day. Then, for a period of two weeks, they had to try a diet which contained just 900 calories. The calorie content was reduced either by cutting carb or by reducing fat.

The research team analyzed the amount of nitrogen in the urine of the participants and the amount of carbon dioxide and oxygen breathed out by them. This helped them to precisely calculate the chemical processes occurring within the participants’ body.

According to the results obtained by the researchers, after following the low-calorie diet for six days, people on low fat diet lost 463 grams of body fat and the ones on low carb diet lost 245 grams of body fat. So, the body fat lost by people in the low-fat diet group was almost 80% more than fat lost by people in the low-carb diet group.

  • Say what you will… but I’ve lost hardly any weight on a low fat diet and lost about 80 pounds while following that given by Dr. Atkins. I was also the fittest I’ve ever been. Studies come and studies go. Maybe the best answer is to do what works best for you…

    • This was a stupid study, very short term study.

If it was accurately reported the actual study lasted only 6 days on a near starvation diet of 900/day. It tells absolutely nothing about the ability for participants to continue on a diet..

  • Garbage science and publicity bought and paid for by the carb industry.

Fat consumption does NOT make you fat. Carb consumption makes you fat. Real science validated Atkins, and now with profits challenged, the carb industry — cereal grains and addictive junk foods — have cooked up this “study” as a counterattack.

  • Just more from the low fat camp. This is from the same people that “know” fat is dangerous, despite the fact that the studies show fat does not clog your arteries. The US is facing a dia-besity epidemic of biblical proportions since we all ‘went low fat.” But don’t worry, just keep eating sugar and carbs, and we will just adjust how much insulin you will take, and don’t worry, we have plenty of pills to throw at you for all the other wonderful things that come along with obesity and insulin resistance.
