Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs. Google Nexus 6: Android vs iOS phablets

Google announced yesterday that the heavily anticipated Nexus 6 was here, and it arrived with whopping specifications. For the dedicated iPhone user, perhaps switching over to the Motorola built Nexus 6 is a nerve racking proposition. However, the largest flagship device to date, measuring in at 5.9-inches in the display category, it now becomes a hard player to ignore, especially amid issues amongst Apple’s latest software updates.

Here’s how the two smartphones stack up to each other:

Display

If a bigger screen really is important, then Google has won this round convincingly. First off, the Nexus 6 boasts a 5.9-inch display with a 2560 x 1440 resolution, up against Apple’s 5.5-inch display with a display resolution of 1920 x 1080.

Now, in terms of resolution you would need a microscope to tell the difference between the two, but the Nexus 6 boasts a significantly larger screen in comparison to the iPhone 6. If you’re making your decision based on size alone, well then, the decision will be easy.

Design

We’ve all heard about the drawbacks of the iPhone 6. Bending phones, giving you a haircut, or facial-hair-trimming, and everything else negative associated with the iPhone 6 since its launch. But, let’s not forget that everything will bend, or break, if you try hard enough – and that isn’t exactly the best measuring stick for determining which is fundamentally best.

That said, the Nexus 6 is flashy. The design along the back is very catchy and the aluminum frame is definitely something that will catch your eye. However, from an integrity standpoint, the iPhone 6 Plus being one solid piece of aluminum is something that gives the iPhone a certain amount of integrity – compared to the Nexus 6.

Certainly can’t discount the Nexus 6, as it brings a very nice design to the party. We shouldn’t forget though, that the iPhone is designed with a little more practicality and more long term health in mind.

Power

The power behind your device is obviously important, and while it’s difficult to compare these two devices because Apple works very hard to customize their hardware to ensure tip-top performance at all times, it would seem that on paper the Nexus 6 is more powerful.

The Nexus 6 brings a 2.7 GHz quad-core processor and 3 GB of RAM to its users, while the iPhone 6 relies on a dual-core 1.4 GHz processor and just 1 GB of RAM. That said, it doesn’t necessarily that in physical practice the iPhone 6 is slower, it just means the physical output is less on paper by conventional measurements in mind.

Camera

The camera of the Nexus 6 in terms of megapixels wins with ease. However, a lot of camera technology relies on software, and Apple has definitely done its share of revolutionizing in the camera software space.

The iPhone 6 boasts an 8-megapixel camera, while the Nexus 6 brings a 13-megapixel camera to the table. It’s worth noting though, that neither are industry leaders in terms of highest megapixels smartphone based camera. So, again, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the Nexus 6 is a significantly better camera – it just depends on how the software works with the camera in contrast with the iPhone.

Battery and Storage

Neither phone offers expandable storage in form of MicroSD cards, so users are stuck with the storage that the phones come with by default. That said, it will cost you greatly if you want to expand that storage and move up to the higher options of either device.

The iPhone gives you the options of 16, 64 and 128 GB’s respectively, while the Nexus 6 will give users the option between a 32 and 64 GB option. iPhone for mere availability of more options, wins that category, but as mentioned before, will cost you a great deal.

Evaluating the battery of both devices is a little more difficult. While on paper the iPhone battery is smaller at just 2915mAh compared to Google’s 3220mAh, it actually is more efficient thanks to the addition of energy efficient components that give the iPhone 14 hours of video playback, in comparison to the 10 hours of video playback the Nexus offers, according to official numbers.

Conclusion

The differences between the two devices are minor. However, it would appear as though from an efficiency standpoint, and also a design standpoint that the iPhone could be the best long term device for anyone looking to get general use out of a smartphone.

On the other hand though, if you’re looking to sync up several devices, and you’re looking to be as productive as possible with a lot of customization along the way – and you want the hardware to support that – then the Nexus 6 will be the device for you.

Either way, it would appear as though both devices are going to bring a great product to the table that will continue to thrive in an ultra-competitive smartphone market.

  • You forgot to mention that the iPhone 6 will impress all the sheeple better than the Nexus 6.

  • This review is like:
Nexus is better then iPhone on this, but this does not count
Nexus is better then iPhone on that, but that does not count
Nexus is better then iPhone on the other one, but the other one also does not count..
    What a useless review

    • I’m so glad somebody else made this comment so that I didn’t have to.

  • So from what i understand appl chose slower hardware, a smaller, lower res screen, so that the battery would last longer. Oh and they made the phone ultra thin so it folds up in your pocket. That *is* clever.

  • Instead of all that eyewash of trying to make this look like a review/comparison, you could just have gone ahead and said – “Even with all its defects and backdraws, the iPhone is still the best because I like it and am an iSheep”. This would have made this a better read as this way you would have atleast looked honest.
