Antarctic Ozone Hole Has Started Healing

A team of researchers under the leadership of MIT atmospheric scientist Susan Solomon has found that the Ozone hole above Antarctica has finally started healing.

Reports about their new findings first came in the Influential Journal Science on June 30, 2016. Susan conducted this study with the help of other researchers in the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the University of Leeds, United Kingdom.

The study report indicates that this new finding has given a ray of hope for the 30-year-old environmental problem. A hole in the Ozone layer above Antarctica was first discovered in the 1980’s, and from then, it has been addressed as one of the most serious environmental issues by nature lovers and environmentalists.

Susan Solomon compared the case of Ozone hole to a human patient. As per the researcher, we have seen patients who used to get worse and worse in the initial days.

Later, they will stabilize themselves and finally they will show signs of improvement. She added that the same is the case of Ozone hole in Antarctic.

The scientists who conducted this research claim that the hole detected on September 2015 is 4000 million square kilometers smaller than it was in 2000. According to the researchers, this healing has been initiated just because of our choices and policies when it comes to Ozone-destroying chemicals.

The discovery of chloroflurocarbons was first made in the 1974, and experts claimed that these substances will destroy the protective layer in the stratosphere. In 1985, the whole world got shocked as a whole was discovered in the Ozone layer above Antarctica. Now, this hole is getting healed, which is a great thing for our whole planet.
