Ariel Winter, star of Modern Family on ABC has officially won emancipation from her abusive mother. While the legal matter had been playing out for the last several years, since allegations of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of her mother, resulted in a loss of custody. The emancipation though wasn’t something that came easily, and is one of the most challenging legal cases to battle in the U.S. The 17-year-old actress stars in Modern Family, and plays a character that has a fiery personality. However, as many have pointed out, her own family situation was anything but comedic, and now things seem to finally be getting back on track for the actress with endless promise.
She will now legally be able to decide where she lives, make medical decisions for herself, and will no longer be tied down to her mother, who previously had control over her decision making. Interestingly, her mother has gained notoriety as the abusive stage mom that more resembled something fit for a fictional television series than real life. Many outlets pointed out that she has actually been separated from her mother for at least one year, but getting this legally finished was something that had to be done.
She had been living with her adult sister for more than a year, and late in 2014 she was named Winter’s legal guardian. Her father was in charge of her finances and really, once that happened, everything else began working itself out. She posted a lengthy message to her fans on twitter, thanking them for their support and announcing her new freedom.
Winter’s said in that Facebook post, “I am now officially emancipated!!! I’m really lucky I have an amazing support system and lovely people in my life who have given me the support and guidance to have been given this wonderful opportunity,” She wrote. “Most importantly I want to thank @shanelle_gray and my father for their special support regarding this matter, I really couldn’t have done it without them. Thank you to all of my family, friends, and fans who have supported me through all of my endeavors in life, and have encouraged me. Thank you for making my life so special! I can’t wait to embark on my new adventures. ❤️ xo”

The message was an open one, but much like the battle she had in the court system with her mother over the issues – it was something that had always been very public. Now though, it seems Ariel Winter is living a normal life for a 17-year-old, as pictures recently surfaced of her at prom with her date, who happens to also be her boyfriend. For this Modern Family star, it appears as though a new beginning has been had.
